Solaren Risk Management Provides Security and Event Staff for Nashville’s First Sporting Event of the 2020 Season over the July 4th Weekend.

Anybody who has heard of Nashville, TN knows we are most known for being the home of country music. In recent years, Nashville has been gathering attention for its ever growing fireworks display and festivities on the 4th of July, competing with cities like New York City to have the largest display in America. As with all things so far in 2020, we anticipated that 4th of July celebrations in Nashville would look a little different amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Little did we know, it was going to look a lot different. On July 2, during a press conference, Mayor John Cooper announced his difficult decision to cancel the fireworks, shut down all bars for 2 weeks, and revert back to Phase 2 of Nashville’s 4 step reopening plan. With Phase 2 restrictions back in place, the 4th in Nashville looked much different than it has in many years. Most people stayed home to celebrate with family and friends.

However, one place that was allowed a small gathering on the 4th of July was the Nashville Speedway at the Fairgrounds. After the season opener being postponed 7 times, fans were finally able to head to the Speedway to enjoy an afternoon of racing. With their normal capacity of 15,000 reduced 80% to follow Metro Public Health Department’s guidelines, about 1,500 fans attended the opening event. Along with the reduced capacity, all employees and guests were required to get their temperature checked, and asked to follow social distancing guidelines. All staff were required to wear masks with guests being strongly encouraged to do so as well. Every other row in the grandstands was roped off, as well as two seats, every six spaces, to ensure fans were at least 6 feet away from each other as recommended by the CDC. Extra sanitizing stations were also placed all around the Speedway.

During these types of events, Solaren is usually on site to provide bag checks, crowd control, and general event security. For this particular event, as well as events for the foreseeable future, our staff’s duties had a few adjustments. Our event staff, security officers, and off-duty law enforcement provided bag checks and crowd control, as usual, but also worked closely with the Fairgrounds and Speedway promoters, event hosts, and the Health Department to ensure all safety measures were followed.

At the gate, Solaren’s officers checked the temperatures of all fans, vendors, and staff entering the Speedway grounds, turning away anybody who’s temperature was too high. All bags going into the event were checked to prevent any prohibited items on the property. Inside the gates, Solaren’s staff roamed the Speedway and Grandstands enforcing social distancing, and requesting that masks be worn. Down on the track, security officers also ensured compliance among the racecar drivers, requiring that they wear a mask when in close proximity to other drivers, or the crew. All attendees were very cooperative with our officers, and safety measures and requirements were happily followed by the crowd.

Following the race, the Health Department has a planned review to discuss how the July 4th event went, before approving the next race to happen, which is currently scheduled for July 17. As long as fans and drivers continue to cooperate with the social distancing guidelines, the Speedway will hopefully pave the way for all other sports to safely return to Nashville. Until then, we hope to see you at the Fairgrounds.
